Nor’Easter Staff– Senior Viking Basketball Player Samantha Lee made her future plans official yesterday by committing to continue her education and play basketball at Birmingham Southern College in Birmingham, Alabama. Lee, a leader on the team, has shown her balance on the court this season so far, scoring 168 points and 172 rebounds. She has helped lead the team to a 12-8 record and was also on the team two years ago that had the best record in school history at 24-5.  Lee’s impact on the program has made an impression on the coaching staff.

“Sam is an amazing player who really transformed her game over her 4 years.  She worked very hard to become versatile as a player to where she could literally play every position on the court, said Head Coach Will White.  She has a strong inside presence but can also knock down the 3 point shot.  She’s a great team leader who works with our young players to get them ready.”

“In my ten years coaching at Northeast, I can only recall a couple handfuls of student athletes who committed to the program for all four years, and Sammie is one of them, said Assistant Coach Abby Campbell. The time and dedication we ask these girls to put in is extensive, but Sammie has always been fully committed since day one of her freshman year.”

Lee credits her coaching and hard work to her reaching the goal of earning a basketball scholarship.

“It took dedication and of the help of all of my coaches to get to this point,” Lee said.

The decision to commit to Birmingham College wasn’t difficult for Lee.

“Once I visited the campus and saw what they had academically, I knew my decision. I have family 20 minutes away so that helped too, Lee said.

Her impact on the program is has left a lasting impression from her coaches.

“Sammie has been indispensable to the girls’ basketball program. Each year she has developed more facets to add her skill set which has allowed her to become more versatile and play almost any position on the court,” Campbell  said.

“I’m so proud of her because she went out there and accomplished this with a daily work-out routine, both basketball skills but also endurance and strength,” White said.
