Special to The Nor’Easter

The Varsity Football team’s season came down to one kick. Viking players and coaches were kneeling down, eyes on the kick without a word being said. Some on the sideline could not even look.  Senior kicker Amar Jakupovic 27 yard field goal attempt caused an eruption from the team and the crowd as the ball sailed through the uprights. “I just kept my head down and followed through,” Jakupovic said.

The win gave Northeast it’s Seventh win on the season, its first over Lakewood since 2008. The win also completed an almost exact flip in record from the previous season, with the team finishing with a 2-8 record in 2015. The team also dealt with adversity in the off-season. Coach Frioud had a battle with cancer and five players transferred from the school. Despite all of that, the senior class took a leadership role and helped move the team forward.

“This senior class has been through a lot but the leaders of the team have been here from the start and they made this season personal for them, to show everyone that we could still win, even with the loss of players,” Assistant Coach Mitch Disney said.

Although the Vikings only lost twice this season, both losses occurred in district play, so Northeast lost out on the playoffs.

“Even though we did not make the playoffs, our season was great, “Senior Running Back Shaquan Johnson said. “The winning kick in our last game defined our season in so many ways. We fought hard the whole game and I thought to myself at the end of that game, “what a way to end the season.””

The team won its last 3 games of the season coming back from a fourth quarter deficit. Johnson had a season to remember with over 1,900 yards rushing in 9 games, his second county rushing title in as many years and for a third year in a row, Northeast had Pinellas County’s leading rusher.
